Have you had a real vacation lately, or only dreamed of one? If you answered, “yes” to the latter, you’re probably way overdue.
Among the reasons people say they can’t go on vacation, the most common are probably, I can’t afford it. I’m too busy at work. I’ll go later. I can’t take the kids out of school.
Those might seem valid at first glance, but there are more rock-solid reasons to take a vacation than there are reasons not to.
- A study at State University of New York revealed that men between the ages of 35 and 57 who take vacation reduce their risk of death by about 20 percent. Specifically, they reduce their risk of death from heart disease by 30 percent. The men in the study who hadn’t taken a vacation within the previous five years had the highest rate of heart disease and the highest death rate.
- Researchers at Wisconsin’s Marshfield Clinic found that women who vacation regularly are less stressed, depressed and tired, and they’re happier in their marriages.
- Children who travel perform better in math, reading, geography and general knowledge than children who don’t vacation, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Education.
Airfares and hotel rates are at rock bottom. So, if you don’t have the cash on hand but plan to save the money to vacation later, you’re going to pay more than if you take out a personal loan to take advantage of the bargains now.
Besides, who deserves a vacation more than you?
